Sunday Formation Classes

Rectors Forum
Hosts: Michael Sullivan and Martha Sterne along with various speakers
Our rector, occasionally in dialog with special guests such as Bishop Alexander, will focus on the basics of our faith - through the lens of the Baptismal Covenant.  This is a great class for everybody including those who wish to be confirmed.

Faith and Fiction (Conference Room in the Church Building)
Leader-Sally Parsonson

"A pilgrim," as defined by Ambrose Bierce, "is a traveler that is taken seriously." Whether our travels are pilgrimages outward into the world or inward into our spiritual lives, we must put aside our expectations and preoccupations in order to discover all the wonders of these worlds. On this year's journey, the class will read an anthology of contemporary fiction by writers from more than thirty different countries and will discuss the nature of our own journeys. As is the custom in this class, we will read the story from the assigned list as "homework" and discuss it on Sunday morning. The anthology will be available for purchase at the first and subsequent class meetings.

Wednesday Lunch and Learn
Beginning on September 16,  we will explore the world of Art with a fascinating guide – Sister Wendy of the famed BBC series. We will watch Sister Wendy’s engagements with world art and then discuss. Come, explore the art of world and stay for lunch! Remember Eucharist is offered at 10:00 in the chapel, so arrive early and feed your spirit.

Wednesday Nights

Wednesday Night Epiphany Series
Bishop Frank Allan and Martha Sterne
February 10

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness-
on them light has shined.  (Isa 9:2)

The focus of this series will be the experience of epiphany. One has an epiphany when a light is turned on and one sees in a new way.  We will explore epiphanies through the ages and through many cultures and faiths as well as the extraordinary people who have changed the way people see heaven and earth. We will hear from Buddha, Isaiah, and Plato as well as think about the paradigm-shifting epiphanies of the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. We will learn from theologian, Reinhold Neibuhr, as well as elemental particle physicist and Anglican priest, John Polkinghorne. And threaded through all will be discussions of our own experiences of the Epiphany of the Incarnate Word come to live among us, Jesus Christ. Come join us for any and all evenings.

Additional Weekday Offerings

Womens’ Bible Reflection
Thursday mornings at 9

Each and every Thursday, women of all ages gather in the youth pavilion. Using lectio divina or holy reading we spend time listening to what God's Spirit is saying to God's people in and through the scripture, generally the Gospel for the next Sunday and through each other. Insightful, spirited and honest discussions are part of the delicious fare as well as just plain good company. Come on in we’d love to have you. Contact Alison Schultz for more information.

Gospel Talk
Wednesday Mornings at 6:38

Every early Wednesday morning a community of seekers gathers with one of our priests in the Conference Room for coffee, friendship, and an exploration of the gospel reading for the following Sunday. We join the 7:30 Eucharist in the chapel and often breakfast together. It is a great way to begin your day and get some spiritual midweek refreshment.  If you are looking for community and faith conversation partners, please come. Contact
Anita Pirkle or Martha Sterne for more information.

Education for Ministry
Wednesday Evenings

EFM is a program for lay people designed by the School of Theology at Sewanee. A new group at Holy Innocents’ forms every fall and meets weekly on Wednesday evenings throughout the academic year. More than a Bible study, EFM provides two years of guided reading of the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament followed by a year of church history and a year of systematic theology. EFM provides a safe, small group in which to engage others in theological reflection. There is no pre-requisite for joining EFM beyond a desire to inform your faith. Please contact one of the mentors for more information:
