What happens at Baptism?

At Baptism we recognize that you are a child of God and a member of the Body of Christ. We look forward to the insights you will bring to our life together and what we will teach you and what you will teach us.  At Baptism, we begin a journey together.  The community, as witnesses to the Baptism, have responsibilities similar to those of the parents and the godparents.  The community promises to "do all in its power to support" you.  Upon receiving you, we acknowledge that the child belongs to God.  We accept that God has loved you since long before we knew you.

What do we promise at Baptism?

We have three things that we will renounce: Satan, evil powers, and sinful desires.  These turn us away from God.  Then we have three affirmations: We accept Jesus Christ as our savior, put our whole trust in his grace and love, and promise to follow and obey Jesus as our Lord.  ALL will help you to live out these promises--that is all those you already know and all those you have not even met.

How do we share in the royal priesthood of Jesus Christ?

This new life in Christ assures us a God we can trust and a Holy Spirit to guide us. We can work out what this royal priesthood is becoming as we accept the grace and peace we have been promised. Our private celebrations of our uniqueness will lead us to share with others. Our times with others will create teachable moments for us.
