Communications Committee

Bill Aaron-- Chair, Communications Committee -- 770-321-1334

Communications is one of the most important tasks at the Church, and one that touches almost every aspect of our community. Indeed, “communication leads to community.” (Rollo May, psychologist).

The Communications Committee is responsible for the oversight and improvement of all parish communications, including the website, the weekly newsletter, the bulletin, and other communications at HIEC. Importantly, one of the Priority Initiatives of HIEC’s 5-year Strategic Plan is to “Enhance Internal Communication.”

The Committee recognizes that “communication” is more than just disseminating information. True communication is a two-way process of both delivering information to the parish and receiving information and feedback from parishioners. As American journalist Sidney J. Harris wrote,

“The two words ‘information’ and ‘communication’ are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through.”

Or, as Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw noted, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

The Communications Committee is currently seeking new members. We are looking for parishioners with experience or an interest in assisting and shaping the communication process at HIEC. Whether you have a small or great amount of time to contribute, there is a place for you on the Communications Committee. This is a great opportunity to get more involved in HIEC and be informed. If interested, please contact the Committee Chairperson, above.

Parish Website
Leigh Jackson, Web Administrator -- 404-255-4023 x405
The Internet has become our society’s main vehicle for information delivery and feedback. The Communications Committee oversees the HIEC website (www.holyinnocents.org) and constantly strives to expand and update the website. The goal is for parishioners, newcomers, and other interested visitors to find important information as well as a reference guide to all the wonderful opportunities the parish affords, in an interesting format. The Committee is also exploring more two-way options for the website, including audio sermons, allowing parishioners to access and update their parishioner information, and other opportunities. Content suggestions and information updates should be sent to the web administrator, above.

HI Lights eNewsletter
Leigh Jackson, Editor -- 404-255-4023 x408
The Communications Committee oversees the weekly electronic publication of the parish e-newsletter. The newsletter is intended to allow the clergy, vestry and staff to communicate with parishioners on a timely and regular basis and offer important information and details of upcoming parish activities and events. Copies of the current newsletter are also available on the Church’s website. Information and announcements should be sent to the editor, above.

Sunday Bulletin
Leigh Jackson, Editor -- 404-255-4023 x408
The Communications Committee oversees the weekly publication of the printed bulletin included with the service leaflet at all Sunday worship services. The bulletin is intended to provide the congregation with brief information on Christian Formation offerings as well as other current information. Copies of the current and prior weeks’ bulletins are also available on the Church’s website. Information and announcements should be sent to the editor, above.

Parish Directory
A text version of the updated membership directory is made available to parishioners two times a year (June and December) at no cost.

Every 4 or 5 years, the Communications Committee sponsors an outside directory company to create a pictorial directory. The pictorial directory allows parishioners to become more familiar with each others' faces and names. Every individual or family has the opportunity of having a formal portrait taken with no obligation to purchase the portraits. Copies of the directory are given at no cost to all those who had portraits taken. Copies are also available for prospective members. The pictorial directory was last updated in the spring of 2003.
