“Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength for the Holy Spirit through prayer and laying on of hands by the bishop.” Book of Common Prayer, 860.
“In the course of Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature affirmation of their commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.” Book of Common Prayer, 412.
While not required for Church membership, being confirmed is a requirement for voting at parish meetings, being considered as a candidate for the Vestry, and being considered for membership on the Rector Search Committee.
ADULT CONFIRMATION
Holy Innocents’ usually conducts a class beginning in October and continuing through April for adults interested in being confirmed, received, or reaffirmed in the Episcopal Church. This informative and often entertaining class explores the Anglican way of scripture, tradition, and reason, and studies the history of the church, the Book of Common Prayer, and the sacraments. If you are an adult interested in being confirmed, please contact any clergy member.
