Maundy Thursday - also called Holy Thursday, is the beginning of the three day period known as the Triduum, or the three days. In the church it is celebrated as one continuous liturgical action beginning at sundown on Thursday and continues through the first service of Easter. The Triduum includes the liturgical celebrations of the last supper, the crucifixion and death of Jesus, and the resurrection.
The name 'Maundy' is derived from the Latin word mandatum, which means commandment. Jesus, at the Last Supper, commanded:'And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.' John 13:34 So Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Christ with the Apostles, during the meal Jesus took bread and wine and shared them with the disciples. We continue to share bread and wine as part of our worship. The Last Supper may have been a Passover meal – the meal which Jewish people share together to celebrate the time when God delivered Moses and the people from slavery in Egypt.
During the Last Supper, Jesus washed the disciples' feet. We wash each others feet and are reminded of the humility of Christ and our call to lead by serving others.
