…Workshop Rotation
Workshop rotations or cycles is an innovative way to experience Sunday School that takes seriously the spiritual development of children while providing exciting activities to engage a new level of learning and retention. “Rotation model” means that children work on the same story or concept for several weeks, using different learning approaches in each workshop room they visit.
Some of the highlights of this model are:
- It is fun for children and practical for our busy volunteers
- It uses multiple learning styles to appeal to many different children
- It offers several weeks to learn & internalize biblical story concepts
- It allows MANY adults to interact with children on short-term basis
- It affords continuity for children who can’t attend every Sunday
- It is an educationally sound teaching method – involving all 5 senses & total spirit of the child
Rotations for 2011-2012 are:
Pilgrimage: Seeking the Kingdom of God (September 18-October 16)
- Rotation Leader: Rosalyn Devin
Journey to distant shores as we learn about saints, their times and their holy habits… James the Greater, Margaret of Scotland, Patrick, Thomas Beckett
This rotation is designed to help us seek a spiritual direction in today's world. We recreate life in the Middle Ages and journey as Pilgrims to distant place to learn from the lives of people of faith, known as Saints. On this Pilgrimage, travelers find the "road map" that leads toward life's ultimate destination – the Kingdom of God, a destination that is discovered within each heart, demonstrated in relationships with others, revealed by the work of the Creator, made possible through the gift of the Savior, and empowered by the active presence of the Holy Spirit.
Voice Crying in the Wilderness (November 20, December 4-18)
- Rotation Leader: Liza Mooney
John the Baptist: Mark 1.1-15 A man who wandered but with purpose ..
John the Baptist was the voice crying in the wilderness: “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord.” His ancient message ringing out across the centuries is just as appropriate today. In today’s busy world, life seems to become even more hectic as we approach the Christmas season, but the church calls us in another direction. In the midst of the chaotic storm of frenzied holiday preparations, the season of Advent is a haven of quiet and contemplation – a place to stop and wait and hope.
The Beatitudes (January 15-February 12)
- Rotation Leader: Christy Knight
The Beatitudes: Matthew 5.1-12 Blessed are you …
Do we need to say more? As we focus specifically on the passage of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10) we can see that Jesus brings his radical reinterpretation to this passage as well. When we think about who is “blessed” and why, the statements of Jesus may surprise us. Given the trends we see in human nature, we might expect the rich and powerful to be the ones who are blessed, but Jesus turns our expectations upside down… Blessed are the poor, the powerless, the sad, the downtrodden, and the people who work for peace.
From Caterpillar to Cocoon to Butterfly (February 26-March 27)
- Rotation Leader: Susan Dreschel
Transformation it is all about becoming what God intends God’s Metaphor of Metamorphosis and us to be offers us a thematic approach for communicating the message of Lent and Easter. Centered on the life cycle of a Monarch butterfly, a different stage of its development serves as a symbol each week for the process of spiritual growth during Lent. We will experience the joy of Easter as we grow throughout Lent and affirm God's promise of eternal life.
Messiah: Holy Spirit (April 22-May 13)
- Rotation Leaders: Alessa and Marshall McArthur
The Holy Spirit: John 21.16-21
As the early Christian community hung in uncertainty about its future, Jesus Christ appears after the resurrection to confirm the final instructions given at the Last Supper. “Tend my sheep” and “Follow me” are the paths that one follows in relationship with Jesus. The appearances of the resurrected Christ revealed to the disciples that Jesus was and would be available to them in the Holy Spirit, just as he had been available as the incarnate Jesus. So then Jesus remains available to us in the presence of the Holy Spirit. People can experience the love of Jesus Christ by our loving acts. His presence is felt by our deeds. We too are called to “feed his lambs.
