English for Successful Living provides an opportunity for immigrant adults to learn English to help them live a more fulfilling life in the United States and to enable them to participate in and contribute more fully to every aspect of American society. ESL, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization on the campus of Holy Innocents, has served over 3,000 students with the help of 400 volunteers in its first two years of existence.
Volunteer Opportunities
There are multiple volunteer opportunities.
Volunteer English as a Second Language Teachers sign up to teach 90 minutes per week for a twelve-week session. Teachers can choose from the following class times: Tuesdays or Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 pm or Saturdays from 9:00 am-10:30 am or from 10:30 am-12:00 pm. Individuals can teach in teams or individually. Volunteer teachers with ESL receive all necessary training and are provided easy-to-use teaching materials and lesson plans. Teachers are required to attend a training seminar and to observe classes. There is no requirement to speak another language.
Substitute Teachers undergo the same training as active teachers but are not assigned a regular class.
Conversation Partners meet on a flexible basis with more advanced students who need individual, conversational English practice. No training is required.
Tutors work in the classroom or individually with lower level students. Tutors generally have Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese knowledge.
Registration Assistants help students register for classes, administer placement exams, and assist with book sales and inventory. Assistants sign up for one or more two-hour time slots.
Office Volunteers work on a flexible basis with administrative tasks such as filing, copying, and database entry.
Graduation Hosts organize the graduation party at the end of the session. The hosts plan the decorations and coordinate the potluck event, including securing the program-provided refreshments.
Front Desk Volunteers work during class time at the front desk and bookstore, answering student questions and assisting where needed.
